Hypopigmentation After Laser

Hypopigmentation is a lightening of the skin where it loses some of its normal pigment, appearing paler than the surrounding area. After laser tattoo or scar treatment, it can occur when heat temporarily or permanently affects the melanin-producing cells (melanocytes). Most cases are mild and fade over months.

What hypopigmentation actually means

Your skin gets its color from melanin, a pigment made by cells called melanocytes. Hypopigmentation is simply the medical word for an area of skin that has lost some of that pigment and now looks lighter than the skin around it. It is the opposite of hyperpigmentation, where an area turns darker.

After a laser treatment, hypopigmentation happens when the light energy that shatters tattoo ink or resurfaces a scar also affects nearby melanocytes. Those cells can be temporarily stunned or, less commonly, damaged. When they recover, the color usually returns; when the change is more lasting, the lighter patch may persist. It is different from a scar, because the skin's texture is normal, only its shade has changed.
