The brief white blanching you see after a laser pulse is one of the most common — and most misunderstood — parts of tattoo removal.

A frosting reaction is the temporary whitening of the skin that appears within seconds of a laser pulse during tattoo removal. It is caused by tiny gas bubbles forming as the laser shatters ink, and it typically fades within 15 to 30 minutes. Frosting is a normal, expected sign the laser is working.

What frosting actually is

Frosting is the immediate, snow-white or gray-white blanching that appears on the skin right after a laser pulse strikes tattoo ink. It is not a burn and it is not damage in the way most people fear. When a picosecond laser like the PicoWay® delivers energy to ink particles, the ink absorbs that energy and fractures. Part of that rapid reaction releases carbon dioxide and other gases in the upper layers of the skin, and those microscopic gas bubbles briefly scatter light — which is what makes the treated area look frosted.

The effect is temporary. Frosting usually develops in seconds, holds for a few minutes, and then resolves on its own as the gas dissipates, most often within 15 to 30 minutes. Once it clears, the underlying skin and the tattoo become visible again. Mild redness or slight swelling may follow, which is also expected and settles over the following hours to days.

Why frosting matters during removal
