Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale

A short, plain-language guide to the classification your physician uses to personalize every laser session.

Quick answer

The Fitzpatrick skin type scale is a six-point system dermatologists use to classify skin by how it responds to sun exposure, from Type I (very fair, always burns) to Type VI (deeply pigmented, never burns). In laser treatment, it helps a physician choose energy settings that clear tattoos and scars safely for each patient's skin tone.

What the Fitzpatrick scale actually measures

Developed in the 1970s by Harvard dermatologist Dr. Thomas Fitzpatrick, this scale sorts human skin into six types based on two things: how much melanin the skin naturally carries, and how it reacts to ultraviolet light. Rather than judging color by eye alone, it asks practical questions such as whether skin tends to burn, tan, or do both after time in the sun.

The six types run along a spectrum. Type I is very fair skin that always burns and never tans. Types II and III cover fair to medium skin that burns then tans. Type IV is olive skin that tans easily and rarely burns. Types V and VI describe brown to deeply pigmented skin that tans readily and seldom or never burns. Most people fall somewhere in the middle rather than at the extremes.

  • Type I - Very fair; always burns, never tans
  • Type II - Fair; usually burns, tans minimally
  • Type III - Medium; sometimes burns, tans gradually
  • Type IV - Olive; rarely burns, tans easily
  • Type V - Brown; very rarely burns, tans well
  • Type VI - Deeply pigmented; never burns

Why your skin type matters for tattoo and scar removal

Laser removal works because pulses of light are absorbed by a target - the pigment in a tattoo or the discoloration around a scar - and shatter it into fragments the body clears away. The challenge is that melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color, also absorbs laser light. In richer skin tones (Types IV through VI), settings that are too aggressive can pull energy into the surrounding skin instead of the ink, which risks lightening, darkening, or blistering.

That is exactly why the Fitzpatrick scale is one of the first things a physician assesses at your consultation. It informs the wavelength, energy level, and spacing between sessions so that treatment stays effective without harming healthy skin. Higher Fitzpatrick types generally call for gentler, more conservative settings and slightly longer intervals between visits - a deliberately cautious approach, not a limitation on results.

The same logic applies to scar and pigment work. Because scars and pigment spots sit within skin that has its own melanin, matching the plan to your skin type is what keeps the process safe and predictable across a full course of treatment.

How Laser Eraser uses it with PicoWay care

At Laser Eraser, every treatment is performed by a physician, and your Fitzpatrick skin type is factored into the plan from the very first visit. Our core technology is the PicoWay picosecond laser, which delivers energy in ultra-short pulses measured in trillionths of a second. Those brief bursts fracture pigment through a photomechanical effect rather than heat, which means less thermal energy spreads into surrounding skin - a meaningful advantage for patients across all six Fitzpatrick types.

During a complimentary consultation, your physician reviews your skin type, the ink or scar being treated, and your goals, then customizes PicoWay's settings accordingly. There are no guarantees that any single case will clear completely, but tailoring the approach to your skin gives every session the best chance to work safely. Most tattoos take roughly 8 to 12 sessions to fully remove, and our flat-rate Complete Removal Packages are priced individually.

Frequently asked questions

Your physician determines it during your consultation by reviewing your natural skin tone and how your skin typically reacts to sun - whether it burns, tans, or both. You do not need to figure it out beforehand. This quick assessment is a standard first step that lets us personalize your laser settings for safe, effective treatment.
